bonsai mites
to some extent and most of my herbs last summer (Canberra). This year they have started to appear on the shoots of raspberry I was new and cut the affected leaves and spray with a spray of water as I heard they like it dry. Insectisides Last year, as pyrethrum and other repellents do not work. Any advice would be appreciated, the plants are all on a balcony in pots.

Spider mites love hot weather and dry and breed profusely when they get these conditions – hot, dry spots within are good for them too. If you can recreate the contrary, giving them plenty of moisture, so it does not decrease. I use their natural predators mites others die when their prey is gone, and lots of suppliers of these products. They come as a dust like powder, and you can add them those plants with the most severe infestation. I prefer the natural control that other forms, though fogging and spraying with water before you add physical controls will also lower their rates. Of course, if they are evicted, they will return. They tend to suck sap from the undersides of leaves, so this is where you should direct your attention – there will be some on the upper side, but much more numerous on the lower portions. Some sprays fatty acids also appear to be effective, as some oils – it will be detrimental to all natural predators, so use them before adding any. Search the net for local suppliers to you, they are generally provided by mail, and some places are not repeated packets processing, where they send you a batch every two weeks. They often reappear next year, but it is possible to rid your plants close to them, consistent with repeated action. Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
